“Hey Stranger!”

There’s a not-to-be-missed exhibition happening at Wolves in Illovo at the the moment. It’s called Hey Stranger! and the artist is Leigh Harrington. Her illustrations are whimsical and naive with the occasional hint of the sinister. My personal favourite is the one below, of a couple on a tandem bicycle.

Here is the invitation, with contact details and address. You can also view Leigh’s blog at http://www.wecaaan.com. The exhibition will be up for the rest of the month.

New Life to a Tired, Old Chair

Years ago, I bought this chair from a junk shop in Newlands (Jozi), with the intention of reupholstering it. I’m ashamed to say that until now it’s been sitting in a store room collecting dust. I’ve finally pulled it out, restored the wood, and upholstered it in our “Hi! – words” fabric in crimson and bright red on coffee.

Johannesburg’s First Art Hotel!

A couple of weeks ago (when the weather was still great), after a lazy stroll around the market at Arts on Main, my friend suggested that we check out the 12 Decades Hotel just down the road. The manager was happy to give us a guided tour. The concept behind the hotel is to have 12 hotel rooms – each a creative reflection of a period in Joburg’s history. Each room was assigned to a different artist/designer, who then decorated it according to their interpretation of that decade.

There are interesting spaces which have developed in the Moboneng district: Arts on Main is a collection of art studios, galleries and retails spaces. Main Street Life is an industrial building which has been transformed into a new and exciting complex which houses apartments, studios, a restaurant, gallery spaces, a rooftop bar as well as the 12 Decades Hotel. It makes us, So Kiffsters, very happy to see such wonderful developments breathing new life into Jozi’s city centre!

The Art of Upcycling

“Upcycling is the process of converting waste materials or useless products into new materials or products of better quality or a higher environmental value.”

South Africa is not the most environmentally conscious of nations. We throw a staggering amount of waste into landfill every year and are lagging behind in the global trend of recycling. This is slowly changing though, and we’re realizing the importance of responsible disposal of waste products.

With this awareness growing over the last decade, there have been a dramatic increase in pioneering individuals who have been exploring creative ways of upcycling waste materials. Here are some beautiful examples of functional upcycling:

Here, new furniture is created from old pieces. Worn or outdated furniture is disassembled, sanded down and creatively put back together in its new form.

Old sinks fashioned into a partition add stylish compartmental storage space.
